Skype launch iPhone App

Apple iPhone 3G users will now be able to log on to the manufacturer's online store to get access to the Skype network.

From today, the App Store will be hosting the Skype for iPhone solution, allowing users of the company's latest mobile phones to take advantage of its affordable calling rates.

Skype-to-Skype calls made using an enabled iPhone will be free when using the app in any global Wi-Fi zone and low rates will be offered for those ringing landlines and other mobile phones.

The network's instant messaging service will also be accessible and a number of features will be compatible with the firm's iPod Touch media player.

Scott Durchslag, Skype's chief operating officer, said the company was glad to be able to offer its facilities to iPhone users as this is something that many had requested.

"Skype for iPhone is an experience that offers the same simplicity, ease-of-use and quality our users have come to expect from Skype," he added.

Earlier this month, Apple released the 3.0 version of its iPhone operating system.
