Consumers 'against mobiles on planes'

A new survey has found that most air passengers are against new technology that will allow mobile phones to be used on planes.

The research, put together by market analysts at Synovate and reported by AFP, found that 77 per cent of international flyers would support a ban on mobile phones in-flight.

Synovate's study covered respondents from the UK, as well as the US, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany and the United Arab Emirates.

"More than 90 per cent of travelers in Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong agreed [with a ban], while there was also 'pretty high' approval in Britain, France and Germany," the news agency said the report found.

Despite this, the Guardian reported earlier this month that Irish budget carrier Ryanair could be ready to allow passengers the freedom to use mobile phones "within months".
