'At my signal, unleash hell'

A new game is heading to mobile phones that aims to pit players against the terrifying perils of ancient Rome.

Based on the 2000 Ridley Scott epic of the same name, Gladiator makes its way to mobile phones this year in two formats, one for 3D-enabled handsets and one for those with 2D capabilities.

Commenting on the new game, Giovanni Maruca of Paramount Digital Entertainment said that the company was pleased with what Fishlabs, the developer behind the project, had been able to achieve.

"They have done an exceptional job translating this property into a compelling and entertaining game that we hope will engage and entertain mobile users around the world," he said.

The movie featured Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general who is forced to take on the corrupt Emperor Commodus having been imprisoned and forced to fight as a gladiator in his coliseum.

Gladiator scored five Oscars from 12 nominations - including Best Actor for Russell Crowe and Best Picture.
