The rise of social networking is changing the expectations of consumers with regards to their mobile phones.
At least this is the opinion of experts at JupiterResearch who state that the popularity of the sites could mean that they have the potential to become the "next killer application" for mobile phones, reports 3G.
According to a recent study, handsets currently play a small role in accessing social networking sites but the web pages are often accessed by users several times each day.
Julie Ask, vice president, research director and lead analyst for JupiterResearch's report, commented: "Consumption of media and information on social networks from cell phones has the potential to grow in the long term."
She added that integrating "PC-based experiences" onto mobile phones could be the next step forward for handset technologies.
Popular social networking site Facebook was nearing the 75-million member mark in March this year with quarter of a million people signing up each day, reports WikiAnswers.
