Google 'looking to boost advertising with new phones'

Google's main aim when it introduces new handsets to the market is to increase its advertising, according to one industry expert.

James Atkinson, editor of Mobile – a fortnightly magazine – said the company's "end game" is to have people look at more and more of its adverts, however he wouldn't bet against it producing a device to rival the Apple iPhone.

He added: "Who knows with Google? They always have that ability to suddenly change direction and come up with a surprise like the iPhone."

Mr Atkinson was unsure why it even needed to bring out a phone of its own because it is not a "real competitor" for selling handsets.

Microsoft launches Tag Reader app

Microsoft has designed an application for a Google Android mobile phone for the first time.

The Microsoft Tag reader acts as a mobile barcode scanner and enables the handset's user to scan a specific image via the phone's camera and it will give the consumer a link to a website.

It is similar to a QR code scanner, which enables people to download the software and the phone can identify an image which then navigates the consumers to a web page related to the graphic.

There is no new technology required, it is simply a downloadable feature.

Users interested in having the free app will be able to do so from the Android store, however it is available for other major handsets such ...

Gesture Search 'should save time'

Google has developed a new function for its Android-powered mobile phones that should save handset users time.

Gesture Search has been designed by the company to enable a user to "quickly" find a contact in their phone book by simply drawing the first letter of that person's name on the touchscreen.

The Google Labs application is currently available in the US for devices with Android 2.0 or higher, which could be the kind of new innovation that comes to these shores in the near future.

Yang Li, a research scientist, said it doesn't matter too much if a person's handwriting isn't that neat because the phone will recognise what they are writing.

If one letter looks like ...

Google 'could have a phone to jump the market'

Google could be close to creating a handset that would "jump the market" in the way that the Apple iPhone did, according to an industry expert.

James Atkinson, editor of Mobile – a fortnightly magazine – said if the service provider was to add Google Voice to its phone then people could make international calls for around a penny a minute "or less".

He added: "They've also bought this company called Gizmo5, which has developed some technology which connects Google Voice to VoIP [Voice over Internet Protocol]."
